Biography

A San Diego native, Johanna Taylor was introduced to Dancehall in 2014 after taking a series of workshops with Ragga Jam creator and renown choreographer, Laure Courtellemont. With a background in West African, Afro- Haitian, Hip-Hop, and Jazz styles as well as a love for Reggae and Dancehall music, it was a perfect compliment to her training and passion for dance. She immediately decided to continue her studies, traveling to New York and Los Angeles, and taking workshops from various guest choreographers in the Bay Area.

In 2017 she traveled to Jamaica for the first time, and has made 3 trips since. There she studied with various Jamaican Dancehall teams including Kriptic Klique, Hectic Dymondz, Sopreme Blazzaz, and Xqlusive Dance Crew. In 2018, she became an honorary foreign member of Kriptic Klique, and completed her training in the Stylish moves certification program created by world-renown dancehall ambassador Latonya Style. She is excited to bring dancehall to San Diego and share her passion!

Dancehall Description

Dancehall is a blend of Old School, Middle School, New School, and female steps straight out of the Kingston, Jamaica party scene. Since it is taught from the Western perspective, it strives to honor the creators of these movements while blending it with other Urban styles. Classes focus on exploring and breaking down these steps and combining them in a simple choreography.
